Pitt tells Oprah Winfrey, in an interview to air November 19, that quick outings are thing of the past. "We don't go to the mall," he says, adding that preparing for a car trip is an adventure unto itself.

"It's like a half-an-hour just to get everyone buckled in and make sure they've got their snacks and Z.Z. (Zahara, 3 1/2) has got a blanket and Shiloh's got her silky," he says. "Angie's militant about it. She's right on top of it. Thank God because I'm always forgetting something."

He also shares 2 1/2-year-old daughter Shiloh's latest quirk. "She only wants to be called John. John or Peter. So it's a Peter Pan thing," he says. "So we've got to call her John. 'Shi, do you want...' - 'John. I'm John.' And then I'll say, 'John, would you like some orange juice?' And she goes, 'No!' So, you know, it's just that kind of stuff that's cute to parents and it's probably really obnoxious to other people."

I was staring at the "biography" shelf in my home library when I realized: two people from these books went out on a date. They are Steve Martin (Born Standing Up) and Maureen McCormick (Here's the Story Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding My True Voice). It shocked me that Steve Martin had a date with "Marcia." Isn't he, like, 30 years older than her?

Although they shared growing up in California, proximity to drugs and fathers who had their demons, their life stories are vastly different. Steve Martin has had a career that spans decades. He is a magician, writer, stand-up comedian, and an actor. Maureen McCormick is famous for playing one role, that of Marcia Brady, the pre-teen TV icon on The Brady Bunch, a show which aired for 5 seasons.

In addition to their lives, their books are starkly different. Steve Martin's biography is a slim volume that goes down so easy that you feel like you are having a perfect cup of hot chocolate, not too chocolaty and not too hot. Even the sometimes scary account of his father's distance and violence is told with some warm fuzz. The captions under the photographs are laugh-out-loud funny.

Maureen McCormick's memoir is an often harrowing account of life after the role of Marcia, how hard it was to be an actor because of the role, her sexual coming of age, her experimentation with drugs, quick addiction and mental illness. The image of the "Brady Bunch as Perfect Family" was blown long ago. Remember the bombshell disclosures that Greg dated Carol, his step mother, and that Mike, the Dad, was gay? Despite the blown cover, I still hoped her book would carry me back to my favorite days as a pre-teen, when spending time selecting the colors of yarn pony tail bows to match your outfit was an important part of every suburban girl's day. But only a small part of the book provides any sweet memories of that time, like when Maureen mentions the TV shows, Mannix, I Dream of Jeannie, and My Three Sons. Although the book did not spark the ridiculously simple memories of the 1970s for me, I give Maureen McCormick tremendous credit for shedding her secrets, asking for help and getting well.

So how did Steve Martin and Maureen McCormick end up on a date? Florence Henderson knew Chevy Chase, who knew Steve Martin, who wanted Maureen's phone number. They had dinner and made out and the kissing was good, but Maureen was out of it. It would be their only date.

An improbable date, but it happened. I wonder now as I stare at my biography shelf, who else dated, or should have dated, from the books on my shelf.

I could see Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes, Teacher Man) and Nuala O'Faolain (Are you Somebody?) on a date. However, I think a date for them might have gotten too deep, tragic and bleak. Both are Irish. I picture them in a small Irish car after a night in the pub, with the car headlights illuminating the pelting rain on the windshield. I imagine Frank putting the car in reverse; you just know there will be a car accident on the slick, black road ahead. Frank might have instead enjoyed a date with Haitian writer Edwidge Danticat (Brother I'm Dying). They share the immigrant experience and are gorgeous, rich, emotionally-wrenching writers. Also, the heat of Haiti would balance the damp of Ireland.

A date with Rue McClanahan (My First Five Husbands) would do wonders for any man, but one, in particular: Paul Farmer (Mountains Beyond Mountains), the doctor, Harvard Professor, and infectious-disease specialist, who has devoted every breath and every waking hour of his life to cure diseases for people without hope, help, and money. Rue would have shown him frivolity; her spirit has not diminished even though she plowed through those first five husbands!

Bill Bradley (Time Present, Time Past) and Jill Ker Conway (The Road from Coorain, True North, A Woman's Education) should have dated in college. They are both intelligent and would make a handsome couple. He is one of those rare men who would not be put off by her intellectual superiority and feminist outlook. I would introduce Christopher Ciccone (My Life with Madonna) to Augusten Burroughs (Running with Scissors) because I can't imagine any person with more amazing family stories than Augusten Burroughs, except maybe Christopher Ciccone.

Some matches are tough to make, like Mary Karr (Liar's Club, Cherry). I'm thinking of moving her books to my non-fiction shelf so that I could introduce her to John McPhee.

Recently Bill Ray Cyrus and the producers of Hannah Montana both publicly requested that Sasha and Malia be guests on Malia's favorite show, Hannah Montana. This strikes me as a cynical attempt to capitalize on the recent popularity of the first daughters.

The Obama daughters have already generated an outstanding amount of media interest through their desire for a puppy and their Huxtable-like cuteness. While it would surely be a thrill for the daughters to appear on the wildly popular show, there could be some very negative effects of appearing on the show.

We have seen both what the pressures of stardom can do to child stars and the children of presidents and politicians. Undo media attention and the pressure of the spotlight has negatively affected many children who have sought or been thrust into the media spotlight.

Former child stars such as Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan have shown the negative affects that media spotlight can have on kids and that can affect them as adults. Both of them have had issues with sex, drugs and mental problems and to this day can not live a life free of the paparazzi. All the child stars from Different Strokes had trouble with the law. Todd Bridges did time in jail and Dana Plato died from an overdose. The Olsen twins have also had their bouts with the paparazzi and drugs and Drew Barrymore entered rehab at the age of 14. River Phoenix died of an overdose and Jamie Lynn Spears underwent an extreme amount of media scrutiny after she became pregnant at the age of 16.

As if being the daughter of a president wasn't enough pressure. Gerald Ford's son, Steven Ford was an actor on The Young and the Restless and also struggled with alcohol addiction. Ronald Reagan's daughter, Patti Davis famously posed for Playboy and had a well publicized rift with her parents as and her brother Ronald Reagan Jr. also had a famous rift with his father and is now a commentator for left wing radio station, Air America.

Both of Bush's daughters have had their issues with alcohol which have been well publicized. I know several people who went to school with Barbara and the tales of her drinking and sexing are legendary (including an incident on the top of a secret service car while the secret service watched). Several members of the Kennedy family have struggled with alcohol and drug problems.

Being a President's daughter is pressure enough on children seven and ten. Do they really need the extra stardom and pressure of appearing on a popular TV show. It will be impossible for them to lead normal lives, but the added pressure and media exposure can only have negative affects. Do they need the paparazzi waiting for them after school? Going on her first date with the secret service would be bad enough. Does Malia need to have TMZ following her too? Will the media takeout post a picture of Malia with her first zit? These kids won't be able to have Facebook and Myspace pages like normal children because of media intrusion.

After the Obama daughters got so much attention for appearing on Access Hollywood, Barack Obama had to say that they won't be having more interviews. The Obama daughters have a chance to be wonderful role models from young women of all races. Undue media attention and the temptations of the entertainment world can only hinder their chance of being well rounded mature young women free of pressure, stress, depression and drugs.

Sasha and Malia should receive media attention for being part of the first family and not as separate entities to themselves. We have seen the negative pitfalls of child stardom and while a few child stars have made the transition to mature grounded adults, many others have gone through stress, pressure, mental problems and substance abuse. Let the kids be kids. Let them watch Hannah Montana like all the other seven and ten year old girls. They should be sheltered from the media not thrust into it.
Will Smith's kids have been following in his footsteps, appearing in films and working red carpets, and now younger son Jaden is starring in a movie being made just for him: a remake of "Karate Kid."
Variety reports:

Columbia Pictures is back in the dojo with a new version of the 1984 hit "The Karate Kid," which has been refashioned as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith.

The film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. Will Smith, who is the 10-year-old actor's father, co-starred alongside Jaden in his feature debut, "The Pursuit of Happyness," which Overbrook and Escape Artists produced for Columbia.

The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.

China Film Group Corp. will co-produce in China.

The younger Smith, who next stars in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," is a martial arts practitioner.

Smith has three children: son Trey for a first marriage and daughter Willow and Jaden with wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Jaden, who turned 10 in July, wore his sunglasses at night this summer at premiere for "Kit Kittredge" and at "Hancock."
After weeks apart, an emotional Guy Ritchie was reunited with his sons Rocco and David at a London airport this morning.

The director's children were back on English soil after being whisked away to the US by Madonna, who is in the throes of her Sticky and Sweet world tour.

Eight-year-old Rocco looked delighted to be back in his father's company as he threw his arms around him after walking through Gatwick's gates.

Guy also shared a hug with David, three, whom he adopted from Malawi in 2006, later hoisting him on his hip as they made their way through the terminal.

An onlooker said: 'Rocco shouted, "Dad!" in the loudest voice.'

TotSpot is a new social networking site for parents and their kids to post family pictures and information online. Hollywood moms and dads, including a few familiar faces, turned out with their tikes for its recent launch hosted at TreeHouse Social Club, benefiting Generation Rescue.

Jenny McCarthy and Son

Greening Hollywood: Can you tell us a bit about Generation Rescue?

Jenny McCarthy: Generation Rescue is a parent-run organization that helps and has helped many, many moms and dads these past 10 years recover their children from autism. There are thousands of them through Generation Rescue that are getting their kids better. We basically teach moms and dads about diet, about detox and that's how [their kids] get better.

GH: Did Sarah Palin's youngest child raise some awareness for our nation on autism?

Jenny McCarthy: It raised awareness in that I got to know her better. But she didn't really sell me on things that she'd be able to do. She didn't say, 'Hey, everyone! Autism isn't covered by insurance so I'm going to make that happen.' There weren't any particular points that made me jot them down other than, 'Hey other mom with a special needs kid...' There wasn't enough ammo there.

Generation Rescue is an international movement of scientists, physicians and parent-volunteers researching the causes and treatments for autism and mentoring thousands of families in recovering their children from autism. www.generationrescue.org

McCarthy wrote a book called Mother Warriors that chronicles her experience with her child's autism and the cure she found.

GH: How can you fit being green into a busy "mommy" schedule?

Jenny McCarthy: The one thing you can do is just switch your grocery store. If you went to Whole Foods, 75% of your choices are going to be green, because you're going to be buying organic, you're going to be buying non-toxic cleaning products there which I'm a firm believer of...

People say to me, 'Well, it costs extra. We can't really afford it.' But I say yeah, well, it's amazing how you're able to afford your Starbuck's every day, and all these other extras that if you just managed your budget you would absolutely be able to shop at Whole Foods and become a Green Mom.

GH: Is there room in Hollywood for a Green Mom Coalition?

Jenny McCarthy: There is. The way it will happen and the way it is happening is through our kids becoming ill. Women are much more ready to change the world for their children than they are for themselves. So this generation of Moms who have kids with ADD, ADHD, Autism, Asperger's... have much more of an inkling to be green and make the world a safer place.

I think that Green Moms, let's call it The Green Momfia, is definitely the moms who have suffered with sick kids.

Tori Spelling shares her take on TotSpot

"Being a mother of two, the internet is very important to me. I'm always online doing research, trying to find other moms that I can be friends with and activities for my kids so I think creating something like TotSpot online is a very useful thing for moms and kids.

I know I depend on other moms to tell me the new thing they've found, the new place to go. If we can all exchange information that would be really cool."

Joely Fisher is mother to a 3 year old and a 2 month old and is also part-owner, along with Jeannine Chanin and Tricia Leigh-Fisher, of The TreeHouse Social Club on Robertson Boulevard. Joely enjoys her green lifestyle.

Joely Fisher and Baby

"I had the great pleasure of driving for a month the hydrogen BMW. They're not available now but they could be at a moment's notice if we just realized that there are other fuel sources."

Greening Hollywood: How can you work "green" into a busy mom's schedule? Is it a lot of extra effort?

Joely Fisher: You make habits bad or good. I bought these amazing flashcards made by a company called Eeboo. They teach kids about recycling and turning the lights off and unplugging things... everything you can imagine for the kids to start off on the right path. I'm hyper-conscious of that.

The flashcards are full of pictures, they're very child-like and bright. I think they are age-appropriate for kids as soon as they can formulate a word in their mouth.

GH: Is there room here in Hollywood for a Green Mom's Coalition?

JF:That would be an amazing thing. If you start their little lives off on the good path, then you're going to create amazing humans, so why not?

Adam Katz and Michael Broukhim are the founders of TotSpots, "a social networking site for families to connect and share"

Both entrepreneurs are under 30, are Harvard grads and neither have kids. So how did they end up focusing on tiny tots?

Katz explained, "We're both part of extended families that are a little bit scattered so one of the things that we wanted to do as cousins and uncles is to build something that connected us to our families. It's a vehicle for families to stay in touch with each other and share memories. We realized that within families, the most important things are the kids so that's why we built TotSpot. It's built around the kids about the kids and it's a great way for parents to share memories about their children. It gives all the family members that might be at family events such as birthdays, holidays...who are taking pictures, a way to contribute and share."

Broukhim said,"We created TotSpot.com as a private online scrapbook, TotSpot profiles contain photos, videos, milestones, favorites, and growth charts that can only be seen by invited family and friends."

"The TreeHouse Social Club, which is a great LA organization," chimed in Katz, "put us in touch with Generation Rescue who is the charity we partnered with for our launch party today. It's a place for parents to bring their kids, hang out and engage with them in a bunch of different activities."

Josh Berman, co-founder of MySpace, brought his triplets to the launch and said that Mike and Adam have worked into the site extremely good encryption to ensure privacy and security of the site and any profiles parents may set up for their kids. He said he is not incubating TotSpot per se, but rather still in the investigating stages of the social networking site.
When I read the news yesterday that Joaquin Phoenix was giving up acting and getting out of the business, I felt strangely proud and full of admiration for him. I have always wondered why more celebrities don't come to this same decision, especially the ones who are always complaining about the lack of privacy and the pressure to stay physically competitive. I mean, when you have tens of millions of dollars in the bank, doesn't that give you the luxury of "opting out"? I've always fantasized about it, haven't you?

But then I saw the video clip of the interview wherein he reveals this startling information and I was embarrassed for the interviewer. Joaquin Phoenix came across as smug and arrogant when Extra's Jerry Penacoli laughed at his statement, assuming he was just joking. The scorn and derision on Joaquin's face was obvious. I couldn't believe how self-important he came off, as if to say "How dare you question the great and powerful Oz (Joaquin)!" And then it dawned on me... this is why celebrities have trouble giving up "celebrity." They are so accustomed to someone hanging on their every word; ready to fulfill every wish and desire that normal every-day life would be a tremendous adjustment.

Case in point: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Here are two people who have committed themselves to many worthy causes, and for that I am very grateful. They have the power and the money to contribute to the world in a way that I can only imagine. But correct me if I'm wrong, didn't they also make a commitment to parent and raise 6 children? They certainly have enough net worth to be able to take a break from working in entertainment, continue their charitable work, and focus on raising emotionally stable children. Can someone please tell me why these two can't stop making movies? Is it the ego-gratification that is so alluring and impossible to let go of? Is it the guilt of disappointing managers, agents, studio execs and others that make money off of them? Is it the fans?

Frankly I don't care what it is. I have a judgment about raising children...if you're not going to make the full commitment, then don't do it! Children are not objects through which we look for our own shiny reflection. They are human beings that have varying individual needs from the day they are born. Studies in neuroscience suggest that the quality of attachments made to the mother or caretaker in the first year of life is the most profound determinant of healthy relationships and good mental health in the future. How then can healthy attachment occur when the parent is out of proximity to the child? As humanitarian as Angelina is; recently traveling to Afghanistan for 3 days, her children remain estranged from their mother for that time. Who is the priority here? What about the needs of her own children?

Mia Farrow was the first celebrity I can remember who adopted children from many cultures and ethnic backgrounds. Unlike the Jolie-Pitts, I have nothing but admiration for her. Why? Have you heard anything about Mia Farrow in the last 2 decades other than her husband, Woody Allen, seducing and marrying their daughter? No, she stepped out of the lime light to raise her children. That became her job. And don't get me started on Woody Allen! I am disgusted that he is still making movies and hasn't been shunned for being a child molester. This is a man who began taking semi-naked pictures of his adopted daughter while underage. Not that waiting until she was 18 years old would have been excusable. But for all intents and purposes, this was the only father figure she had ever known. For him to have broken that trust is deplorable. And then what... all is forgiven because he married her and exclaimed "The heart wants what the heart wants." Oh, it was the "heart" was it? Yeah, right.

And now that I'm on a tear... who is this Jennifer Lopez? How much attention does one woman need? It's unbelievable to me that she would compete in a triathlon Sunday morning in Malibu and then be celebrating her husband's birthday, which she planned, for $400,000, that same night in New York! Where are the twins? Having competed in the same triathalon several years ago, I know how many hours of training go into preparing for such an event. Trust me, it's obsessive. Although a woman has a right to do with her body as she sees fit, and there is enormous pressure to "lose that baby weight" immediately, I have to question the amount of hours she is choosing to spend away from her newborn twins. That's not time you can get back as far as establishing consistent attachment. I wonder if this is simply nothing more than ego-gratification. I have another example to support my musings... two weeks after J Lo's $400,000 soiree, she and Marc renewed their wedding vows in a lavish suite at Caesar's Palace. All done spur of the moment in the pre-dawn hours. So if you're both out partying all night, who's taking care of the children's feedings? Not them, that's for sure! How much stimulation and excitement does this woman need anyway?

It may not be fair of me to judge since I am on the outside looking in. But as a psychotherapist with plenty of experience seeing "the writing on the wall," I would bet that my observations are right on the money. So Joaquin, best of luck with your music career. Just don't be too disappointed when no one cares!

Something adorable to begin our day! We spotted New York's cutest toddler, Suri Cruise, running around in the rain yesterday. Dressed in a black and white dress and her signature Mary Janes, Suri kept herself dry with a big lady bug umbrella.

Walking around can get tiring and umbrellas can get heavy and lucky for Suri she had her mom Katie Holmes to give her lift.

Springtime will bring a whole new blossom into the home of supermodel Niki Taylor and her NASCAR husband Burney Lamar: They're expecting their first child together, Taylor's rep announced to PEOPLE Thursday.

"Burney and I are very excited with this stage of our lives," says Taylor, who is due in March. "We're thrilled."

Taylor, 33, met her husband while the duo was paired together to sign autographs at a charity event, and were married in December 2006. In lieu of wedding gifts, the couple asked that donations be sent to Victory Junction Gang Camp, a camp for chronically ill children where they continue to work raising money and awareness.

Nicole Kidman, who stars in the upcoming Baz Luhrmann film "Australia," talked to the upcoming Parade magazine about mothering baby Sunday Rose, her teen Bella and Connor from ex Tom Cruise, and marriage to country singer Keith Urban.

The new mother has reacted intensely with "whatever that primal thing is, the need and desire to keep her very protected," Kidman says. "People say, 'Oh, it would be so much easier if you'd just let them get a photo of her.' And I can't. I'm like, 'I don't want to. I want her to stay out of that.' Maybe that will wane as she gets bigger, and I'll be easier with it. But for now, I'm still keeping her in a bubble." Her eyes turn red and moist.

"I'm raw and emotional," Kidman admits. "I cry even thinking of her. But they are tears of joy. Because I suppose I never thought I would get to have it. To have been given it so late in life--I'm so ready for it. And I think giving birth to a child, as a woman, is what we're born to do. I don't mean that to sound sexist, because many women don't get to do it, and I thought I was one of them. But at the same time, if you are given that gift, it's an extraordinary thing."

On the other hand, Kidman says, "It's very bittersweet. Because, at 41, I think, 'I want to see her 21st birthday, and I want to see her get married.' My relationship with death used to be far more ambivalent, I think, and now it's very much about staying in the world. That's why in the past I could jump out of planes and take a lot of risks. Strangely enough, I think when you have children at 25, you still have that 'what will be, will be' attitude. It's such a different way of parenting. Bella and Connor were very free and easy, probably because they had parents who were very young and jumping around the world and pretty easygoing." Kidman and Cruise share custody of their adopted children and, as she confirms, they were raised in Scientology. When the subject comes up, though, Kidman stiffens. "I just don't talk about it," she says.

What she'd clearly prefer to discuss is the present. "Bella and Connor are 15 and 13, so we've taken them, Tom and I, almost into their adult life. To then have a birth child that I have to take into adult life, give her her wings, it's a big purpose. I know my place. Put it that way." She suddenly laughs boisterously. "I like knowing my place, though. I feel grounded with it."

I ask Kidman what her new daughter is like. Can she tell so far? "Well, I'm her mother, so she's special!" she exclaims. "I'm devoted. I'm totally devoted to her."

She's also devoted to Urban. The baby looks like him, Kidman tells me. "I'm glad, because when he goes on tour, I say to him that he leaves a little bit of him with me."...

With Kidman's marriage to Urban, the nitty-gritty turned up sooner than either of them expected. "We were thrown into his alcohol problem three months into the marriage, and that was big," she says. "We became the closest we could become, because we had to bare our souls. We did 10 years of marriage in three months. You go to hell and back with this--when the addiction takes control of the life, it's terrifying. But there is hope, and we work on it every day, and we are in a place of actual peace right now, which is a beautiful place. I love him so deeply, and he has done an amazing amount of work, and he is an amazing husband, and I am just very, very grateful. I think we are both in a place of humility."

In an additional web exclusive, she talked beauty:

Q: There is a great emphasis on youth in Hollywood. Is that something you think about?

A: I'm not enamored with youth. There isn't wisdom in youth. My own sense of vanity is not that strong. I get ready in five minutes. I'm not a mirror person. But I like to look healthy -- the youthfulness is in health.

        UPDATE:
Seth Myers sat alone at the SNL Weekend Update anchor desk saying, "I'm Seth Myers. Amy Poehler is not here because she is having a baby," to wild applause. Update later ended with Maya Rudolph and Keenan Thompson singing a special duet version of "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" with lyrics like, "We love you Amy" instead of "Oh pretty baby."

Poehler's rep released a statement saying the baby's name is Archie Arnett and weighed in at 8 lbs, 1 oz

PREVIOUSLY:
Amy Poehler had a baby boy Saturday says TMZ, and thus she's done with Saturday Night Live:

Sources tell TMZ Amy Poehler has been in labor all day and just had a baby boy.

We're told Seth Myers will do Weekend Update all by his lonesome, and there's no word on whether her "Bronx Beat" skit with returning cast member Maya Rudolph -- who will also be playing Michelle Obama tonight -- has been totally scrapped or not.

Maya Rudolph did return as reported to play Michelle Obama in one sketch and at the end of Weekend Update sang a song for the new mom.

Poehler and husband Will Arnett announced they were expecting their first child back in April. The heavily pregnant Poehler gave what may be her greatest skit performance ever last weekend with her Alaska rap, as seen below.

She has a show deal with NBC and told Mens Vogue she's not returning to SNL after her maternity leave.
"Madonna's adopted son would be better off in Malawi,'" says his biological father in the U.K.'s Daily Mail.

Apparently, "The real father of Madonna's adopted son feels bitterly disappointed that she is getting a divorce -- and yesterday declared: 'I am still a poor farmer with nothing to offer, but maybe he would be better off back with us.'"

The father, Yohane Banda, came to this conclusion because, he says, David "doesn't look happy" in recent photos. When Madonna and Ritchie adopted him, they told Banda that David would have a stable, very happy life. ''I thought she would take him away from the danger of malaria and other diseases that kill children here... It feels like yesterday that Madonna promised me a happy life and good education for him."

But, "If there is no love in the family, is there any love for him?" asks Banda, who has since remarried, after his first wife died in childbirth with David. The photos show the Bandas as a smiling family, standing outside of their hut in Malawi. The "dream has been turned on its head," the story concludes, "David now faces a life spent shuttling across the Atlantic between Madonna and Guy's homes."

Of course, none but a few people in the world know what kind of a parent either Madonna or Banda actually is. But the Mail sets up the classic excruciating choice: would you give up your child for wealth, hoping the wealth will lead to happiness, or would you keep your child in a poverty-stricken situation that is full of love?

If you were a custody judge, charged with picking the best home, which would you pick? Despite the message we're fed by Hollywood, it's not a simple question.

According to the research, parents all agree on one thing. Four years ago, two American psychologists asked the simple question: What do you want for your children? Over 10,000 adults in 48 countries across six continents responded overwhelmingly with one answer: for their children to be happy.

The question is whether money or love leads to that happiness.

On the side of Madonna, the world is more about money and privilege than ever before, and Madge is the ultimate material girl. In 2001, the richest one per cent of households in the U.S. held 18 per cent of the income, and in 2006, the same one per cent held 26 per cent.

More than ever, access to power, money and fame is determined not by merit but by lineage. David would truly grow up under a ray of light -- just by being Madge's kid, there'll be more doors for David than almost anyone else in the world. He would be able to do whatever he wants, at the highest level.

But it's not just the Beatles (and almost every romantic comedy ever made) who think all you need is love, science is starting to chime in.

One recent Canadian study that interviewed kids from all social classes found spirituality was the most important factor. Defined as "an inner belief system," it accounted for eight to 17 per cent of the average child's happiness. How they measured this so empirically, I'm not sure.

By contrast, money and the material status of the parents mattered not even one per cent. "What we found out with kids is they know how wealthy they are. They are well aware of how rich their parents are, but it contributes to less than one per cent of children's happiness," said one of the study's researchers.

A second study found that good relationships are the key ingredient for lasting happiness, and that strong relationships with parents lead children to go on to have positive, less troublesome relationships with friends, romantic partners and even their own future children.

Banda: two, Madonna: zero.

The second study found that money does matter -- to a point. "While it is true that living under very deprived circumstances is related to being unhappy, once people's income exceeds the poverty level, further increases in wealth do not lead to corresponding increases in happiness... if wealth did lead to happiness, we might expect people in today's society to be much happier than in the past decades as we are earning much more. However, studies across the globe have shown that, in spite of great increases in income since the 1950s and 1960s, levels of happiness have remained pretty much the same."

Given that Banda gave David up due to concerns about extreme poverty, I think it's fair to say Madge gets that round, but with no extra points for her dozen or so houses.

Also, while relationships are extremely important for children's happiness, another important ingredient is called mastery. This means that children are happy when they have something they are "good at," and when their family and other important people in their lives notice and appreciate these skills." Of course, it can be easier to experience "mastery" when you have enough leisure time and money to be able to practice a skill or take lessons, and aren't worried about whether there'll be dinner afterwards.

I'd say they're tied at this point. But as a wringer, both studies showed that kids aren't doomed to repeat the negative parenting patterns they learned, and can be happy regardless of good or bad childhood relationships if they have reflected on them.

The second study also finds that a large part, perhaps even more than half of children's happiness, is dictated by genetic factors. So, David might be equally happy, regardless of environment. And if he had the promise of future power, wealth and fame in one, that might just tip the scales, so to speak.

I took the question to my own highly scientific study of six friends in a bar the other night. At the beginning of the evening, all emphatically said that love beats money every time. But after more discussion, the response was mixed. Interestingly, the friends who come from money, or who have achieved it, are on the side of love, and those who seemed to come from loving but less wealthy backgrounds picked money.

And me? If I was a custody judge, charged with picking the best home for a baby, I'd like to say I'd pick the loving one. I had a ridiculously loving, happy childhood, and as corny as it is, I feel the effects of that every day.

The irony is, like many others, I'm holding off having kids, even though I know I'd be able to love them. Childcare, extra-curricular activities, travel and university are so expensive, and I don't want to fail to provide things that would make my future kids happy. I'd love any thoughts on how to reconcile this conundrum.

Guy Ritchie is "in pieces" after seeing a photo of his son Rocco in a T-shirt supporting Alex Rodriguez's New York Yankees baseball team, a source tells Usmagazine.com.

The 8-year-old was photographed sporting the shirt Monday in New York City.

"He's actually been crying over it," says the source on the set of Ritchie's upcoming drama Sherlock Holmes. "He's in a terrible state but is doing his best to be on form at work."

As her daughter Ever turns 1, Milla Jovovich reveals that her child birth over Halloween was exceptionally difficult.

"I was in labor for 72 hours," Jovovich tells PEOPLE at the Spike TV's Scream 2008, in Hollywood over the weekend. "I was up for 48 hours, for two nights. I started Halloween night. By the time I went into the hospital, it was the night of November 2. I finally went into the hospital and had the epidural."

Despite the ghoulish lack of rest, Jovovich, 32, says when Ever Gabo Anderson arrived, "all I wanted to do was just show her who her mom is, and talk to her."

Everybody loves to make fun of celebrity baby names, and some of them are as laughable as they are outrageous: I'd count Moxie Crimefighter, Peanut Kai, and Sunny Bebop among those that seem to be more publicity stunt than name.

But stars are also responsible for some amazingly creative baby names: rediscovering wonderful old gems, honoring family members and artistic heroes, exploring the far corners of the earth in search of original choices. Names, after all, are something everybody has and don't cost money. That puts even more pressure on celebrities to come up with names that stand not only apart from but far above the crowd.

For a complete list of recent celebrity baby names, check the starbaby chart on nameberry. Which ones qualify as the best?

Knox Leon & Vivienne Marcheline -- The names of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's infant twins are particularly appealing and inventive from a couple who've proven to be as adventurous with baby naming as they are with everything else. Knox, a family name on Pitt's side, is Scottish and has an X ending like that of their other sons. Leon is a wildly popular (yes, it's true) name in Europe, where the twins were born. Vivienne means life -- all names with v's in them seem to be stylish at the moment -- and Marcheline is after Jolie's late mother. A winning pair.

Alice Zenobia -- I love the name of Tina Fey's young daughter, and not just because Tina is one of my heroines. It's a gentle but quirky literary name, summoning up not only Alice in Wonderland but a host of wonderful women writers named Alice from Munro to Walker to Hoffman and McDermott, as well as Zenobia characters from Edith Wharton and Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Felix -- Gillian Anderson just gave birth to little Felix, her third child. The x-ending of this ancient name meaning "happy" may have special significance for the ex-X-filer. Anderson, who seems to love a good joke, has an older son named Oscar. Felix's biggest downside: It may be the next Oscar, i.e. hipster name du jour.

Suri -- Here's one of the few starbaby names that my nameberry partner and coauthor Linda Rosenkrantz and I disagree on. I love this silky, simple, yet exotic Persian name meaning "red rose." Linda, not so much, mostly because of its negative connotations in other cultures: It means pickpocket in Japan, for instance, comb in Javanese, and it's also a breed of South American llama.

Sunday -- Not to be outdone by her ex, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have chosen an equally original name for their daughter. Reportedly inspired by the name of an Australian artist, Sunday Reed, the name harkens back to ancient day names favored by many African tribes, among others, who named children after the days of the week, seasons, and holidays.

Beckett -- Chosen by both Conan O'Brien and Stella McCartney, this strong Irish name is rich with literary associations.

Birdie -- Busy Phillips obviously knows the advantages of having an unusual name, and Birdie is cute in the British nickname-name way that is fashionable right now.

Ignatius -- Cate Blanchett's third son was given this ancient saint's name with a so-far-out-it's-in feel. Pop nickname: Iggy.

Honor -- Hottie Jessica Alba has always been better known for flash, but Honor is a gorgeously classy choice that calls to mind such qualities as time-honored and honorable.

Pamela Redmond Satran, the author of nine bestselling baby name guides, is a developer of the new baby-naming website nameberry.
